Brimming with vitamins and nutrients, marshmallow extract works to rejuvenate your skin naturally.
What is marshmallow root?
Marshmallow is a perennial herb that’s native to Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa. Its INCI name ‘Althaea’ is derived from the Greek language meaning ‘to cure’ whereas its love of growing in salt marshes, by the sea, along riverbanks and other damp areas is what gives it its common name ‘Marshmallow’.
Marshmallow is grown abundantly in England, hence we like using this ingredient in our products and workshops. A low carbon footprint ingredient, hurray!. The herb grows to an average height of 4ft tall and its delicate pink-purple flowers bloom summer to autumn time.
The plant’s roots are filled with a substance called ‘mucilage’, which is extremely effective at moisturising the skin. The mucilage content is considered highest in winter, making it the best time to harvest the skin-conditioning roots.
Marshmallow is known for its healing properties and has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. Packed with vitamins, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, it’s often used as a natural remedy for treating infections, aid digestion and improve skin health.
What do we use it for @ skin I care?
The Mucilage is a gel-like substance that forms a protective layer to seal in moisture - making it a popular choice for dry skin.
Marshmallow root also works to reduce the appearance of fine lines in areas with delicate skin that are prone to drying out. With the help of marshmallow root and mullein, even thin skin around the eyes will be reinvigorated and hydrated - making the fine lines less visible and leaving you looking younger.
If you suffer from extremely dry or sensitive skin, the temptation to over-moisturise with heavy skincare products can be strong, but this is often counter-productive - leading to oily skin and breakouts.
However, introducing ingredients that offer deep moisturising without blocking the skin is the best way forward. We show you how to incorporate marshmallow root in your daily skincare regime. See our next workshop dates
Whether that’s with facial oil, moisture balm, face scrub or toner, the results will be sure to make a lasting impression.
